On October 14th 2000, I took Lauren with me to fix a computer in Florissant, MO. Since we were already that far, we went on to Alton, IL. As we crossed the new bridge on Highway 367, the city of Alton, Illinois appeared.
We stopped and took some pictures near the famous Grain Elevator where to flood levels are marked. We also took pictures to the north and east of some of the historic buildings.
Further north in Alton stands the only remaining corner of a Civil War-era prison. We took a break and Lauren sat on the blocks that used to be a prison wall. A monument stands where many died, and Lauren stood in the very spot.
We then went north on the River Road along the Mississippi River until we reached the Brussels Ferry. We boarded the ferry, a very tight squeeze. We were unable to get out of the car! After our landing back in Missouri, and one last look back, we traveled on to the Golden Eagle Ferry which would take us back to St. Charles. The Golden Eagle was less crowded and larger. Lauren could now get out and walk around!
We came back through Orchard Farm, then St. Charles on Highway 94, then 370 to 70 to home - whew, what a trip!
